Minneapolis Institute of Art
2400 Third Ave. S.
The second in the Art Illuminating Human Rights series, the October 22 event will feature spoken word artist and community activist Abdi Phenomenal, filmmaker and installation artist Essma Imady, and hip hop/ spoken word artist Fres Thao.
Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, Phenomenal is a second-generation poet who is reviving the great poetic tradition of his forefathers through his perspective in a diaspora tongue. MCAD MFA candidate Imady, who grew up in Damascus Syria, will present a reading on “The Feminine Divine within Islamic Mythology,” exploring Maimouna Guerrisi’s intriguing sculptural piece, "Supha," in Mia's contemporary galleries. Hmong American, Thao will perform his original work in response to themes present in Cy Thao's evocative Hmong Migration painting series.
The Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Advocates for Human Rights are collaborating to present the "Art Illuminating Human Rights" series. The series is inspired by the kaleidoscope and the intricate, prismatic reflections it creates. Just as tapping and twisting a kaleidoscope brings multi-faceted, colorful patterns into focus, series’ events will be the catalyst for participants to wrestle with human rights issues and to consider the diversity of opinions that will be revealed.
The partnership is forged through a shared commitment to freedom, justice, and peace.
Events are free to the public; however space is limited. To make a reservation, call 612-870-6323 or reserve online.
