The Advocates congratulates our Refugee and Immigrant program volunteer attorneys Martha Overby and Jody McGinley, and consulting attorney Loan Huynh, for their work in helping a client from Ethiopia obtain asylum.
In December 2003, the Ethiopian army targeted and killed hundreds of Anuak people in the western Gambella region of southwestern Ethiopia. As a result of the massacre, thousands of people were forced to flee. The client, who was a pastor in the region, provided aid to the displaced Anuaks in the form of food aid and other assistance. Because of his work, he was threatened by local government officials. Subsequently, he and his family were closely monitored. After hearing that he would be granted asylum, the client said to his attorneys, "I also thank you so much for being with me through the uncertain times I faced.”
