Consulting Attorney Training: Make Your Experience Count
Friday, April 5, 2019 10:00 AM

The Advocates' pro bono partnerships match the deep expertise of experienced immigration attorneys with the energy and resources of attorney volunteers from a wide range of practices, providing legal representation in more than 1000 matters each year. Pro bono partnerships make it possible for busy immigration attorneys multiply their expertise while harnessing the energy and capacity of the broader legal community.

The Advocates relies on experienced immigration practitioners to mentor hundreds of volunteer attorneys who represent asylum seekers, immigrants in detention, and victims of trafficking throughout the Upper Midwest. Our corps of dedicated consulting attorneys help volunteers navigate immigration law while zealously representing their pro bono clients. This training will have something for both new and experienced consulting attorneys. We will discuss best practices in mentoring and maintaining contact with and giving feedback to volunteer attorneys. Experienced consulting attorneys will share what works best for them when mentoring non-immigration attorney volunteers. We will also explore ways immigration practitioners can partner with a volunteer team to expand the capacity to serve low-income asylum seekers, such as handling a hearing in partnership with a firm that briefs and prepares the case.
