The 2017 Human Rights Awards Dinner will feature Mark Hetfield, president and chief executive officer of HIAS, a leading global agency assisting refugees, who will deliver the event's keynote address and will be presented with the 2017 Don and Arvonne Fraser Human Rights Award.
Also that evening, Ilhan Omar, member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, will receive The Advocates' Special Recognition Award. Elected to the legislature in November 2016, Omar is the first Somali-American, Muslim woman in the nation to hold an office at this level. Prior to her election, she served as the Director of Policy Initiatives at Women Organizing Women, where she empowered East African women to take civic leadership roles in their community.
