Advancing & Defending the Human Rights of the World's LGBTI Communities

The Advocates for Human Rights conducts a range of programs to promote human rights of LGBTI persons around the world. In the Global South, The Advocates collaborates with partner organizations in various countries to document human rights violations against LGBTI persons and advocate for protections within their countries, as well as with regional and international human rights mechanisms, such as the United Nations and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

In addition, The Advocates:

  • Provides partner organizations with training and technical assistance, particularly in the area of human rights monitoring and fact-finding;
  • Engages in public education and awareness-raising on LGBTI rights around the world;
  • Represents LGBTI asylum-seekers in Minnesota and North and South Dakota, USA

Through our work providing legal representation to LGBTI persons seeking asylum from countries such as Cameroon, Jamaica, Liberia, Nigeria, Uganda, we have identified the potential for LGBTI human rights defenders in the diaspora to impact change in these and other countries. With our Paving Pathways for Justice & Accountability resource and other tools, we support positive diaspora engagement with addressing anti-LGBTI discrimination and violence in Africa

We welcome new collaborations, and invite organizations in other countries to reach out to us to propose partnerships, particularly in the areas of human rights monitoring and fact-finding relating to LGBTI rights and advocacy with the United Nations and African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights. (Please note: The Advocates is not a grant-making organization.)

Specific focus areas include:

  • Discrimination based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity;
  • Safety and security for human rights defenders working to promote the rights of LGBTI persons;
  • Violence targeting LGBTI individuals;
  • Legal reform in countries with laws that discriminate against individuals based on actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity

The Advocates’ activities related to LGBTI rights include:

  • Monitoring and fact-finding relating to human rights of LGBTI individuals;
