The Advocates for Human Rights applauds today's action by the Saint Paul City Council calling on Village Voice Media to shut down the adult section of its online classified section Backpage.com, which serves as a platform for sex trafficking in minors. Joining in the press release issued by the City of Saint Paul, Michele Garnett McKenzie, advocacy director at The Advocates for Human Rights, said "today's action not only puts much needed pressure on Village Voice Media to stop profiting from the sexual exploitation of women and girls. It's a reminder to us all of how widespread this human rights abuse is in our own community."
Saint Paul joins a wave of opposition to Village Voice Media's Backpage.com, including 51 attorneys general. The Saint Paul City Council action follows a similar resolution taken by the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners on July 10.
