In February, Women's Program Director Cheryl Thomas attended a meeting hosted by the University of Virginia Law School with Rashida Manjoo, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women.  The purpose of the meeting was to identify urgent issues on violence against women in the United States.  Ms. Manjoo has requested that the United States be the subject of her formal review and report in 2010.  Urgent issues identified by the advocates at the meeting included violence against women in the military, poverty and its impact on violence against women, and child custody in domestic violence cases.
