The backlash to women’s rights was an alarming global trend before the pandemic hit. COVID has exacerbated this trend, increasing the vulnerability of women and girls to violence and exposing the fragility of recent gains made towards full gender equality. It has allowed the rapid adoption of regressive policies that roll-back women’s rights and limit their economic opportunities, while constricting the space for civil society to act. Despite these challenges, civil society actors have found new inspiration to counter the backlash, forging new international coalitions and developing innovative strategies to adapt to changing circumstances and combat violence against women.
