The Advocates for Human Rights recruits and trains volunteer medical and mental health professionals to provide expert assessments and testimony in support of asylum seekers. By providing pro bono physical and psychological evaluations in asylum cases, medical professionals help establish whether the asylum seeker’s injuries or trauma is consistent with their claim for asylum. Written evaluations and live expert testimony in immigration court hearings provides critical evidence in asylum cases and educates adjudicators about the effects this trauma may have on the applicant’s ability to testify. The Minnesota Asylum Network is a collaborative project of The Advocates for Human Rights, the Center for Victims of Torture, and Physicians for Human Rights. Training is provided for volunteers.
