The Advocates congratulates Refugee & Immigration Program Director, Emily Good and our partners at the University of Minnesota Law School’s Immigration & Human Rights Clinic on three recent asylum victories!
The first client worked as an election monitor for an oppositional political party in West Africa and as a result of his political beliefs, he endured imprisonment and beatings before seeking safety in the United States. Supervised by Steve Meili and Ms. Good, two groups of students worked with the client on his asylum application: Jenna Nand, Edmund Ahodome, Kevin Lampone, Claudia Ochoa, Caty Wyly, and Jonathan Moler. As a testament to the high quality work of the students, the Asylum Officer noted the “excellent” legal brief submitted in the case.
The other two were both affirmative cases that Ms. Good handled, with assistance from four University of Minnesota students who were here in January through the Asylum Law Project. The students were Sam Manning, Susie Hallquist, Neal Schanz and Bryan Smith. One client is a Coptic Christian from Egypt who experienced a kidnapping and nearly forced conversion. The other case was a young Tibetan woman from Nepal who experienced abuse as a child and sexual assault and is an advocate for a woman’s right to self-determination, against arranged marriage, and freedom from violence.
