WOMEN’S RIGHTS: CEDAW AND RELATED ISSUES
Adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) is often described as “the international bill of rights for women.” Ratifying States (not yet including the US) commit themselves to promoting the equality of women and men, to abolishing gender-based discriminatory laws, and to establishing public institutions to ensure the protection of women against discrimination. This presentation will consider the extent to which those goals are being met in this country and elsewhere in the world.
Presenter: Beatríz R. Menanteau is a Staff Attorney with the Women’s Human Rights Program. Prior to joining The Advocates, Beatríz practiced general corporate litigation as an Associate at the law firm of Maslon, Edelman, Borman & Brand, LLP in Minneapolis. Beatríz has assisted in advocating for amendments to Minnesota’s Sex Trafficking Law which passed in May 2009 and participated in the presentation of a three-day training in The Republic of Georgia on “Effective Advocacy and Legal Representation of Domestic Violence Victims under the Georgian law on Domestic Violence.”
