Case #25-0085702
Case number # 25-0085702
Type of Case: Affirmative Asylum
Language/interpretation needs: Oromo, interpreter needed
Date of Entry (and status, if any): 08/12/2023, F1 Student Visa.
**N.A violated the terms of his student visa by working and will therefore technically be without status after February 13 when Ethiopian TPS expires. Filing deadline for the I-589 would be in August, or six months after the expiration of TPS status, but ideally will be filed sooner due to the current administration's actions.
Case Summary: N.A. is an Ethiopian citizen born and raised in Saudi Arabia who fears persecution by the Ethiopian government for his and his family member's political activism. N.A.’s father was a student activist that opposed the Derg regime during the 1990s, which eventually led to him fleeing to Saudi Arabia. While in high school, N.A., along with two friends, started a website that collected, translated, and shared news about conflict and political conditions in Ethiopia. In late summer 2025, after N.A. was already in the United States on an F-1 visa, his two friends were arrested in Ethiopia. One was later released after being severely tortured and reported that interrogators questioned him specifically about the website, its purpose, and those involved. N.A. does not know the whereabouts of the other friend. N.A.'s family property has also been seized by the Ethiopian government.
Theory of the Case: Fear of future persecution by government actors on account of political opinion.
Commitment: File of I-589, Interview; Work permit (initial and renewals)
Experience level/case team size recommended: Appropriate for any experience level and team size
