The Advocates for Human Rights: The Advocates is a volunteer based, non-governmental, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights. The Advocates' programming focuses on women's rights, including freedom from violence; migrant and refugee rights, including both advocacy and legal services; peacebuilding in post-conflict societies; due process and freedom from persecution; and economic and social rights. The Advocates work to bring about systems change, reinforce accountability mechanisms, raise awareness, foster tolerance, and help individuals more fully realize their inherent rights.
Position Summary
The Annual Fund Assistant helps inspire primarily individuals and law firms to support the mission of The Advocates for Human Rights by processing and acknowledging contributions in a timely manner. The preferred candidate will be interested in learning and have some experience with gift processing, events, and working with interns and volunteers. We are seeking a colleague who is passionate about human rights and the rule of law. You will play an important role in securing funds that fuel the mission and operations of The Advocates. The role is hybrid with 3 days in the office and more as required by program needs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Gift Processing (40%)
- Maintain, update and correct constituent records
- Enter donations from mail batches, NXT donations and other giving portals
- Prepare Acknowledgement letters, phone call acknowledgement lists and other correspondence
- Work with the finance team to ensure Raiser's Edge donor database reconciles with financials (weekly and monthly)
- Process returned mail
- Create queries as needed
- Create event registration and donations forms
- Import constituents, event participants, donations and attributes
Event Support (20%)
- Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of the annual Human Rights Awards Dinner, house parties and donor relations events
- Help meet attendance and fundraising goals
- Liaise with event co-hosts and sponsors
- Answering questions from potential attendees
Development Intern and Volunteer Support (20%)
- Work with development interns
- Help recruit, hire, and onboard interns
- Help design, delegate, and supervise projects and tasks
- Support, teach, and train in development best practices
- Conduct exit interviews with interns upon end of internships
- Work with development volunteers
- Maintain relationships with current volunteers
- Reach out to and onboard new volunteers
- Schedule volunteers and support in office and remote projects
Appeal Assistance (10%)
- Assist with effective solicitation and communication strategies for donors using multi-channel approaches
- Assist with the coordination of quarterly appeals
- Assist with printing and mailing appeals
- Help meet new donors, donor retention and applicable donation goals
Additional Responsibilities (10%)
- Participate in staff and team meetings
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required:
- Driven by excellence in accomplishing routine tasks

- Excellent writer who can synthesize financial needs and opportunities compellingly
- Outstanding communicator who inspires people to support the mission of The Advocates
- Able to establish priorities and manage concurrent projects effectively, set priorities, and follow through
- Focused on details while being mindful of the big picture
- Committed to the advancement of human rights and/or social justice
- College graduate or equivalent
Preferred:
- Fundraising or related field
- Constituent management databases, RE/NXT preferred
- Events management
- Appeal writing, segmentation, and coordination
- Working with annual fund donors
Compensation
The compensation is $20.60/hour. Generous benefits package currently includes vacation (employees accrue 3 weeks of vacation during their first year, and up to 6 weeks beginning their 5th year of employment), 3 personal days, and 11 paid holidays, 2 weeks of accrued sick leave annually, 6 weeks paid parenting leave; employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and long-term disability/AD+D/life insurance; and pre-tax retirement plan.
Location and Status
This position is currently hybrid, with at least 3 days/week in our downtown Minneapolis office. This position is not eligible for fully remote work.
This position is represented by the Office of Professional Employees International Union, Local 12.
This is a non-exempt, hourly position.
