Case Summary: Mr. D is Fulani. In 1989, Mr. D’s father was murdered by government officials for opposing the government. In 2017, Mr. D’s mother was murdered by a government-affiliated doctor while she was hospitalized after participating in a women’s protest. He left Mauritania primarily because of Beidane government discrimination against other ethnicities. He believes this played a part in his parents’ deaths. In 2019, Mr. D participated in the Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement and attended a protest against racism and slavery. A police officer hit, arrested, and detained Mr. D, who was tortured in jail for 3 days before being released. Police officers told him he does not have the right to protest and talk. Mr. D also says that the Mauritanian government is ruled by a white minority that discriminates against the Fulani community. In 2024, the government also began to kill people involved in protests against falsified election results, which prompted Mr. D to leave.

Theory of the Case: Past persecution and fear of future persecution by government actors on account of political opinion and race.
