LGBTIQA+ Partner Story

The Advocates is happy to spotlight our long-term partner, The Eagles for Life Kenya.

What brought you to LGBTIQA+ advocacy?/Why do you do LGBTIQA+ advocacy?

My journey into LGBTIQA+ advocacy has be deeply rooted in personal experiences of discrimination and abuse as a bisexual individual. Having faced prejudice and mistreatment firsthand, I have felt compelled to speak out against such injustices and advocate for the rights and dignity of all individuals regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. My own experiences of discrimination fuels a strong sense of empathy and determination to create a more inclusive and accepting society where everyone can live authentically and free from fear of persecution. These personal struggles have served as a driving force behind my passionate advocacy efforts within the LGBTIQA+ community.

What were the challenges you saw in your community and what improvements have you seen because of your work?

In my community, marginalized groups, especially the LGBTIQA+ population, faced pervasive discrimination, limiting their access to healthcare and justice because of religious and cultural beliefs. Through advocacy, we've seen increased awareness and understanding, leading to tangible changes like anti-discrimination policies and legal reforms. Support networks have also been established, empowering individuals to seek justice and support. Despite ongoing challenges, our community has experienced a positive transformation, marked by greater acceptance and inclusivity. Continued advocacy holds promise for further advancements in ensuring the rights and well-being of all members, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
