The mission of The Advocates for Human Rights is to implement international human rights standards to promote civil society and reinforce the rule of law. By involving volunteers in research, education, and advocacy, we build broad constituencies in the United States and select global communities.

Position Summary

The Communications & Outreach Assistant will support partnerships with volunteers, supporters, and allies; assist with marketing and communications; and support events. The Communications & Outreach Assistant will report to the Communications Director and will work closely with the program and development teams.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contact Management: Assist with management of e-mail lists, online forms, and other online communications and data management systems to maximize engagement of volunteers, supporters, and partners.
  • Online Engagement: Support digital engagement and organizing. Draft, proof, and send campaign e-mails; assist with content creation to meet identified metrics; coordinate banner ad creation and placement.
  • Social Media Engagement: Support social media by monitoring the performance of each account, supporting development and posting of content.
  • Writing, Communications, and Design: Support production of bi-annual print magazine and other promotional materials; draft, edit, and maintain  digital content including website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, e-mails, and online advocacy and development appeals; support the creation of rich and engaging content that helps tell the story of our work and our campaigns in creative and compelling ways.
  • Events Support: Support The Advocates’ public events including continuing legal education programs, Minnesota State Fair, and other fundraising or community outreach events. Timely respond to requests for speakers. Support event logistics, promotion, registration, and analytics.
  • Interns: Ensure smooth operation of the internship program, including receiving, routing, and responding to applications, as well as, supervising intern projects
  • Other Duties as Assigned: The Advocates is a dynamic, team-driven organization that values collaboration and sometimes needs “all hands on deck.”


Essential Skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to write clearly and persuasively and to conceptualize and communicate work in concise, compelling ways. Fluency in English required: fluency in another language a plus.
  • Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, flexible, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously. 
  • Successful and positive work experiences building effective, high quality relationships with partners, including the ability to connect with and engage diverse populations.
  • Strong overall technical skills and the ability to learn new platforms; familiarity with online advocacy, communications, email/data management systems, and social media platforms
  • Familiarity with digital marketing strategies, tactics and tools. 
  • Adeptness at design and experience using Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign.
  • Experience with CRM platforms, i.e. Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge, a plus.
  • Experience with data analytics and analytics tools such as Google Analytics, a plus.
