The Advocates for Human Rights is seeking a Staff Attorney for its International Justice Program. The Advocates for Human Rights is a volunteer-based, non-governmental, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion and protection of internationally recognized human rights.
The Advocates’ International Justice Program develops innovative, sustainable strategies to hold governments accountable for human rights abuses and to strengthen institutions in the international justice system. The International Justice Program partners with diaspora and international human rights defenders to build their capacity to use local, regional, international, and transitional justice mechanisms to end gender-based violence against women, the use of the death penalty, and violence and discrimination based on race, religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity and sexual orientation. The Advocates holds consultative status with the United Nations and the International Justice Program coordinates The Advocates’ monitoring and reporting to United Nations human rights bodies and regional human rights mechanisms.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The International Justice Program Staff Attorney will work on a variety of projects related to emerging U.S. and international human rights issues. Responsibilities include fact-finding through interviews and other methods, conducting research, and drafting human rights reports, educational resources, and advocacy materials. Responsibilities also include providing expertise and resources to legal professionals and advocates locally and internationally, as well as training on human rights issues. The International Justice Staff Attorney will also supervise volunteers and interns, as well as working closely with local, national and international partners.
Qualifications include a J.D., as well as experience with international human rights law and policy. Strong interpersonal, leadership, organizational, communication, and presentation skills, as well as excellent research and writing skills, are required. Candidates should be comfortable working with diverse groups of people and have a demonstrated interest in human rights, social justice and international affairs. Proficiency in a foreign language is desirable. Candidates must be willing to travel internationally.
