Remote Training Opportunities Available

The Advocates for Human Rights offers a number of asylum-based trainings throughout the year. A number of these trainings are now available for viewing at your own convenience.

Asylum Corroboration and Testimony Webinar
The Advocates staff attorneys presented a webinar in February 2015 about corroborating an asylum application and preparing your client to testify. Members of the Immigrant Advocates Network can view the webinar through their website by clicking here.

Three-Hour Comprehensive Asylum Basics Training
This CLE is for attorneys and support staff with minimal to no asylum experience willing to represent a client seeking asylum through The Advocates' pro bono program. This training provides an in-depth introduction to asylum law and procedure, and it reviews the documentary evidence necessary for asylum applications. Tips and advice regarding representation of low-income asylum seekers is also featured.

An alternative asylum basics training specifically focused on cases of LGBTQ asylum seekers is also available to view.

Minnesota Detention Project Training
In anticipation of increased detention of immigrants, this training serves to orient interested attorneys and interpreters to volunteer with the Minnesota Detention Project. Volunteers are needed to assist with everything from client intake, interpretation, representation in master calendar and bond hearings, application preparation and representation at merits hearings. The training will include a series of simulated hearings to expose volunteers to real-time issues that arise in the context of representing detained immigrants.
