Meet a Few Members of Our Nepal School Community

Kanchi started in the first kindergarten class at the Sanku-Palubari Community School (SPCS). To get to school, she had to walk 1-1/2 hours each way. There were times her parents wanted her to stop school and help them farm. But she stayed in school and worked hard. Kanchi was one of two girls in the first class to graduate from eighth grade. Not only is she the first in her family to enroll in school, she is the first girl from Sanku-Palurbari Community School to graduate from 12th grade. Now a young woman, she is studying agriculture in college. She hopes to bring organic farming techniques back to her village. When asked what the school means to her, "I gained from this school my life," she said.

Shree and his younger brother Hari labored as very young children alongside their parents in the brick factories of Bhaktapur, Nepal. They rose in darkness at 1 a.m. to carry heavy loads of mud and sand to mix bricks. Shree began attending SPCS when he was seven. Now a high school graduate, Shree enjoys writing poetry and listening to music. His score on Nepal's School Leaving Certificate exam was one of the highest in the district, a highly regarded achievement in Nepal. His goal is to teach match and science in a rural part of Nepal where children often have to work instead of attending school.

Rabina started at SPCS as a pre-schooler. English is her favorite subject. She credits the quality of the education she's receiving for her success. Rabina also works hard. "After coming home from school, I will do my homework in night and morning," she said. Her goals are ambitious. "I want to serve the people by helping people in need by founding free health facilities and becoming a nurse," she said.



likes SPCS's teachers and studies very hard; she "just loves" English. School, for her, is perfect; Dilip, who teaches social studies, is her favorite. “Every moment in school is special,” she said. After 10th grade, Sajeeta wants to continue to her education and become a teacher at SPCS.

His favorite subject is social studies, and he is fluent in English. He thinks that SPCS is better than government schools. After graduating from SPCS, he wants to continue his education. His ultimate goal is to make roads, protect people in natural disasters, and join the Nepalese army in order to help the needy. 



and her younger brother and sister―all students at SPCS―work in the field with their parents outside of school. From their home, it can some times take an hour to commute to SPCS. Rohjina’s favorite subject is math, and she loves to think and participate in creative activities. The friendly environment and good teachers are what she loves best about SPCS. On holidays, she works on homework and writes poems and short stories. Rojina plans to continue her education beyond SPCS. She wants to attend a university and become a nurse. “The people who are in a difficult condition, I want to help them,” she said of her plans.



Sushma joined SPCS in 2014, and teaches Nepali to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, as well as General Knowledge Conversation to 2nd, 3rd, and 5th graders. A master level teacher, she believes that the teachers are a good, cohesive team. The headmaster, Anoop, is a good leader and a good administrator, which is very beneficial to the school, according to Sushma. She also values the young teachers and their knowledge of new technology.

Chhatra teaches English and social studies to children in grades 6 -12. SPCS has been successful because of all the people work hard for the betterment of the school, according to Chhatra. The teachers have a team approach―everyone is responsible and no one takes all the credit, which is different than other schools. The teachers also visit students' homes and get to know the families,helping to address issues that may hinder student success. He is excited for the new school building because it will be larger and will be able to hold a computer lab, which will serve as a huge benefit to the school.

Kumeu teaches science, general knowledge, health, and social studies. She credits much of the school's success to the teachers' approach: they are cohesive, practice equal teamwork, create a positive environment, and are friends with each other. She believes that students are eager and committed to their studies because they have first-hand experience of what results from a lack of education. The school prospers because teachers and students relate to each other like friends, she said.

Nirmal teaches math to grades 1-5. He believes SPCS succeeds because of the support of community members, The Advocates, and the teachers' excellent teamwork. The teachers have good coordination and communication skills, and they have the spirit to do things together.

Sharmila teaches nursery and kindergarten classes. She values the teachers' teamwork and devotion, and she believes the management committee and principal provide lots of support to the school. She thinks that the reason SPCS is so successful is because parents are involved in the school and work well with the teachers.
