Minneapolis, MN (April 20, 2021)

The Advocates for Human Rights joins our Minneapolis community is welcoming today’s verdict in the trial for the murder of George Floyd.

Our work is rooted in the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, whose preamble reads:

Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,

Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind…

Whereas it is essential, if [we are] not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law.

Today’s verdict strikes an important blow against the denial of fundamental human rights wrought by systemic racism and for respect for the dignity and worth of the human person. It is up to each of us, as Minnesotans committed to justice, to make good on its promise.
