Why Pompeo’s Commission on Unalienable Rights Is Wrong

On July 16, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo unveiled the draft report of the Commission on Unalienable Rights. As expected, this draft report is a political manifesto rather than a neutral policy report. It attempts to rewrite accepted human rights principles and elevate property rights and religious freedom above other rights. It limits protections for historically marginalized groups, including women, racial and ethnic minorities, and the LGBTQI community, human rights which Secretary Pompeo calls “ad hoc” rights. These ideas contradict long accepted principles that all human rights are equal in importance, not a hierarchy that allows for the exercise of some rights in violation of others. The draft report is a cynical attempt to gain political points with religious groups in the United States at the expense of long recognized universal human rights protections. It proposes dangerous ideas that undermine essential protections for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. Please join us in opposing this draft report.
