South Korea - Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women List of Issues: Death Penalty - January 2023

This report highlights issues concerning discrimination against women as they pertain to the death penalty in the Republic of Korea (South Korea). Although South Korea is abolitionist in practice, the country has not formally abolished the death penalty, so women remain at risk of being sentenced to death. The report highlights that gender-based violence and discrimination against women put women in South Korea at higher risk of facing discrimination in death penalty proceedings.
