The Advocates Condemns Trump Travel Ban: “Illegal, Xenophobic, and Harmful”

Minneapolis, MN -- The Advocates for Human Rights unequivocally condemns the Trump Administration’s travel ban, a policy that elevates xenophobia, bigotry, and political games over American values of family, community, and equality.

Last week, the Trump Administration announced a near-total travel ban—which took effect less than a week later—for individuals from twelve countries, with a more limited ban affecting people from an additional seven countries. “Wholesale travel bans targeting entire nationalities do not produce any measurable national benefit,” said Madeline Lohman, Advocacy and Outreach Director at The Advocates for Human Rights. “Instead, they separate families, leave people at risk of persecution and torture, deprive employers of essential workers, and erode the vibrant fabric of our communities.”

Not only is this policy illegal, xenophobic, and harmful – it’s unnecessary. Instead of scapegoating immigrants, the Trump Administration should focus on real solutions that ensure safe, orderly and fair pathways to migration, reducing irregular migration and enhancing security —the precise underpinnings of the Global Compact on Migration. “True national security begins with human rights and a commitment to equality, not with policies of division and discrimination,” continued Lohman.

The Advocates calls for the Administration to immediately withdraw this illegal and harmful order and for Congress to pass the NO BAN Act. America can refuse to scapegoat immigrants and instead reaffirm a commitment to smart, humane immigration policies that keep families together, attract a talented workforce, and protect the persecuted.

People who think they or a loved one may be impacted should read the National Immigration Law Center’s explainer for more information about the travel ban and its expected impact.
